A glitched site
« on: August 02, 2008, 11:42:05 pm »

I just found a site that, were in not for it's major magma problem, would be the most amazing site I have ever started on.  Unfortunately, however, it is unplayable, and has a VERY wierd quirk.

Upon embark, I immediately paused as usual, and looked around.  What I found was that the magma (yes, there is pleanty of magma) was in a rounded 'chamber' that only had half a wall.  The right side was nicely against the side of the mountain, while the left side of all the magma lay exposed, open.  As I went down in Z-levels (there are 60ish of them, ending high above the ground in a series of wonderful peaks.  I LOVE this site.) I found that the magma pipe (I guarantee this was supposed to be a pipe) ended at level +10, at which point, DIRECTLY below all this magma, was a circular chasm, complete with antmen, naked mole dogs, you know the type.

I unpaused the game, and sure enough, the magma, this entire pipe of magma, fell.  It splashed over the sides at the +10 level because the chamber changed sizes, and threw magma about such that my dog was knocked off the sheer cliff by it (temp. is off, so no burning) and fell to it;s death.  The pillar of magma (well, now it would be lava, yes?) fell down, down, until it hit the bottom of the chasm.  The game froze.

People have, I read a few days ago, complained of extreme lag when items are thrown into the chasm.  Consider, then, an entire magma pipe suddenly hitting a chasm.  The FPS dropped to about 1 frame per minute.

Unfortunately my game is highly modded, so I can;t show this to you.  However because of this and other features, this is the absolute coolest site I have ever found.  I just wish that when it hit the chasm's bottom, it stopped and became a volcanic neck.  Then it would be playable.  And if I had a faster computer (I was using a 6x6 survey embark.  My computer can;t actually handle that well anyway.)  But anyway, I have told you of the bug, may all be well!

This is a pretty common and well known bug.   If a magma pipe and a bottomless pit are in the same embark area, this occurs pretty often.

Fun to watch though.

Thats not the problem. Toady said that the same thing that makes magma pipes exit on the surface makes bottomless pits (circular chasms) exit on the surface too. Only problem is that it adds the magma too. So it's just a bottomless pit problem, not a magma pipe + bottomless pit problem.
