Does anyone know how common Magma is? I started in a location that doesn't have any visible surface magma, and I'm wondering if I'll have to stick with using charcoal for all my metal working.

In both of the forts I've started so far, I've found chasms. Is the same likely to be true for magma, if I dig far enough?

Well, the most obvious source of magma would be a volcano site. Volcanos are those red ^ marks on the world map.

It's uncommon - generally maps that have them are mountains or seismically similar biomes.

You can't depend on magma for metalworking anymore. However, you can now trade for charcoal, steel bars, anvils, or any weapons you want.

So don't worry too much. Concentrate on masterwork goblets. Trade for whatever is too much of a hassle to make on your own.

Yeah; I've got tons of limestone, iron, gold, and platinum, but no coal or magma. I'm currently chopping down the forest quite quickly; I'll have to get a dwarf with a good trading skill before I run out of wood.

I found a Volcano. It's pretty uneventful for a volcano, but at least my Axedwarf forced a pack of gnomes over the side and let them fall to their magma-y death.

I haven't figured out quite how to use it to make a forge.

I got a volacano hematite and no coal or charcoal or limestone argghh!!1

There are other things that can be used instead of limestone. All you need is a flux. Check the stones screen to find out.

Also you do need coke/charcoal but there is a new source for them as well.

Look on the stones screen for all information but the alternitive to coal is lignite.
However due to a current bug Bituminous coal will only produce one coke and lignite will only produce one coke. Toady has mentioned that Bituminous coal is supposed to produce 3 coke and lignite would produce 2 coke.
An alternative to limestone is:
   * Dolomite - used in the making of pig iron and steel bars
   * Chalk - used in the making of pig iron and steel bars
   * Marble - used in the making of pig iron and steel bars
   * Calcite - used in the making of pig iron and steel bars

This is off the wiki but I haven't tested it yet.

adust the raws, its a mistake, not a bug. the reactions are a separate file. find and fix the error yourself.

The raws are correct -- but it doesn't produce the 2 or 3 it says (first number is chance, second number is the amount produced).  All alloy reactions are broken as well.  As a quick fix, you can add more product entries.  I should have a new version up late tonight or tomorrow or whoever.

Go for the named mountains. They have some magma. Near the demon pits. And the Adamantine.

EDIT: SUDDEN RELEVATION! You can use stone for magma workshops!
