Sazir Ebsas, "The Bridge of Candy"

This is my first community fort. I'm going to be asking you guys for helping making decisions, both minor and major, which will decide this forts fate - and in addition, all dwarves will be up for community naming, presuming that they're not already taken. The story will be told from an in character journal point-of-view. Oh, and before I forget; I suck at Dwarf Fortress. Expect miasma to kill us all before we get anywhere. On the off-chance that we survive unicorns, mountain goats (oh no), cave-ins, lack of food, and that I manage to create an irrigation system that doesn't flood the entire fortress, I'm sure this is going to be an interesting and worthwhile experience. Until my computer chokes on the 60-something Z-levels worth of content, that is.

Feel free to chime in with anything you feel appropriate. Want me to skewer that unicorn I just caught and feed it to the war dogs? Ask. Have an idea? Suggest. Want a blood chamber, strategically located above a brook, to make it run red with blood constantly? Do tell. Also, as a final note before I begin, I'm using a map available at the DFFD because, after spending two and a half hours generating maps, I simply couldn't come up with anything decent and interesting.

1st Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

We've finally arrived. Located between four different animal breeding grounds - two haunted, one joyous, and the last untamed - our site is very dangerous. That was one hell of a trip, diary. Moldath H. Christ on a stick! BLOODY UNICORNS!

Okay.

Chill out, Xenofell.

Okay.

Yes. As I was saying, we have finally arrived at our destination. I'm sure you, if you're reading this, know all about us and our reasons for coming - but it wouldn't be proper for me to exclude that, now, would it? Well, we're here because of politics. My family has fallen out of the kings' favour, and thus, I've been sent here, alongside my rag-tag crew of seven, to create a bridge. More specifically, I have to connect all three obsidian spires together. In addition, I've been tasked with overseeing the construction and day-to-day life of a working, Dwarven city.

What an honour. Yes, I know what you're thinking- "Xenofell, you're crazy! It's a punishment!! You're not meant to enjoy it." Well sure, you're probably right. But I'm in charge of a city. A city. The intent of the king, when he ordered us here, was clear; but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy myself. I'm going to be the driving force behind the biggest city. You'll see. Well, I suppose you've already seen, right? Right. Whatever.

Oh yes, and about the name. I don't know. I think the king was drunk. We're just rolling with what we have here.

I best introduce the crew, then.

Meng Zontathur. This Dwarf is one of our two miners, and he's also a very skilled architect. I predict good things from him. Motivated, happy, skilled. He's a bit on the cold side, though, which worries me - but hopefully, all the complex moral decisions will be down to me.

Rakust Emkeskal. She's our second and final miner. Interesting enough - and this is a very unusual combination - she likes to cook. Yes, a cooking blockhead. I like her. She's a pretty quick talker as well.

Monom Oslanarban. He's our engineer, or more specifically, our mason and our mechanic. He's going to be the main man working behind the scenes to make the clocks tick. He's also silent, ugly, overweight, and hates social interaction. On the bright side, he's a genius!

Fikod Delerotung. Nothing much to say about this Dwarf. He's been quiet for the entire trip. Offical records indicate that he's our wood guy- he's going to be making our beds, and possibly some mechanical parts as well.

Rith Lisatiteb. He's our farmer, and he's also going to be brewing some alcohol (woo!) for us. I have great faith in this one. He's cool-headed, he works hard, and he's got a social spark. I may promote him.

Litast Mengetest. Our solider. Helpful, kind, a nice soul.

And finally, myself, Xenofell Stakudnokgol. Again, it wouldn't be right if I judged myself, so I'll leave that up to the offical records. I'm the expedition head.

As you can see, our crew is very rag-tag, but I wouldn't discount them quite yet. They seem capable enough.

In a few minutes, I am going to meet with our architect and our engineer, and start planning the initial construction. I'm going to have a large, well furnished room - a room suitable for royalty. We won't have time to mine out large rooms for the others, I think, so they'll have to make do with what they get.

As I write this, Fikod is outside, chopping down trees to get some wood; let's hope the Elves don't catch him. Oh, Elves. I forgot to mention. The king declared war on them. And when I say war, I mean "git ye arse in gear an' kill any Elves ye see! Move t'it, ye cur!" It looks like we'll be seizing the goods of any Elven merchants whom happen upon our little town. I'm sure the animals they carry will come in useful.

From a quick scan of the area, it appears we have chosen our location well, if not a bit recklessly. To the north-east, we have a magma pipe- it's open to the surface, and I worry that the evil that dwells within may "dwell without", if you get my meaning. We'll have to do something about that soon.

To the east, there is a river, running through the obsidian and creating a canyon-like effect. It seems like the perfect location for a town, and an indoor drinking pool.

The obsidian spires and located to the east, north-east, and west. The smallest is the one in the north-east, whilst the one located in the east is the largest. The west obsidian spire will, once the bridge is constructed, connect us to a popular trade route.

The engineers have arrived. I must be going. I shall update this log regularly, as is my duty. Wish us luck.

Welcome to Sazir Ebsas!

Haha, indeed. Chaaaarlie!

On another note, I'll update this once I get a few people signed up. No point in continuing if there's no interest, eh? :)

I lay claim to Fikod the woodworker. Call him Korpulfur. Technically, his name is Korpúlfur, but I doubt you can spell that.

Could I get the farmer/brewer?  I think Zyll will do for the name.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Everybody's been dwarfed. Also, the mix-up with the dwarves has been fixed. :)

2nd Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

The meeting went well.

We've decided on a plan, for now. We're going to begin hollowing out the stone and create seven rooms; enough to house all of us. From there, we're going to move on and create space for workshops, and then, finally, a dining hall for the masses to dine in. I'll dine in private, of course. We're also going to need to create a farm, and soon, considering that we consumed many of our supplies on the journey here. I've also ordered our supplies to be moved to a location slightly north of the brook until we can get them inside.

Once we're relatively settled, we'll begin the cutting and smoothing of stone, for the construction of the bridge.

The dwarves have started addressing one another by nicknames. I don't know why, and some of them are utterly absurd, but what can you do? Anything to keep the workers happy, I suppose.

Well, not quite anything.

3rd Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

By Moldath's beard! Damned peasants. Every last one of them.

They've decided to overrule my decision and set up the farm first. I don't know why- we've enough supplies to last us a year, and I'm sick and tired of sleeping on the hard, hard ground. It's that damned Sir Chaos. He's the ringleader.

I will get my revenge, mark my words.

8th Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

We've finally finished hauling all of our supplies north of the brook. A few enterprising crafters have set up their workshops, and have begun construction of mechanisms, doors and beds.

I also had a chance to try out stonecrafting. It's very relaxing. Creating a toy out of obsidian - it empowers you. It's amazing. I may order a stonecrafting workshop built in my room.

14th Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

The farm is completed, and we have begun construction on the town proper.

26th Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

What in the nine hells is this place?

Pixies...

Elephants. Oh god, elephants.

I've heard alot about elephants. I had a relative that lived in a small town named Boatmurdered. Do you know of Boatmurdered? Elephants. They killed it. Killed it good, I tell you. And they're going to do the same to us!

I spotted a large group of unicorns to the north. The elephants appear to have scared them off.

There is also a very, very large herd of mountain goats up on the obsidian spire. They seem to have hidden at the moment, but they're out there, to be sure. I feel their eyes on the back of my skull. They are waiting. Waiting for an opportunity. An opportunity to strike.

27th Granite, 54, Early Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

The elephants approach. I order the men to dig faster.

7th Slate, 54, Mid-Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

The rooms are finally done, all we need now is to furnish them. I order everybody inside, along with our supplies. I also order Oddbodd to set up a few trap cages, just in case.

Newb seems to have taken a liking to our two war dogs. I've told him to keep his distance, as we plan to chain them to the town walls. He wasn't happy.

Looks like somebody has found true love. Newb and Korpulfur have been getting it on. It's not exactly the most professional thing to do, but hey. Our woodworker and our soldier. Interesting.

1st Felsite, 54, Late Spring
"Xenofell" Stakudnokgol.

After discussion with my subordinates, we have decided to seperate the town into two sections: red and blue, east and west, or trade and social. The east side - across the brook -

Will be dedicated entirely to trade, including creating furniture, crafts, and the like. The west side -

Will be dedicated to the social part of a Dwarf's life. All the housing will be located here, as will the dining hall, and all recreational activities.

I have ordered the widening of the east side corridor, and for various rooms which will house our goods to be carved. I have also taken greatly to working in a craftsdwarf workshop, and so I have had one built in my private quarters. I have been working on creating obsidian short swords for future use defending ourselves against the proboscidea menace. They will not catch us unawares!

We have also begun the planning of a guard house situated between the east-west divide by the brook. This will allow us to position markdwarves overlooking our only entrance (I ordered the closing of the farm entrance, as it will not be needed) and will be a very effective way to keep any potential aggressors or elephants out.

Speaking of the elephant scum, they have been staying to the north. None have approached. This is good news, but I doubt it will last. This is the calm before the storm.

The transfer of all our goods and workshops inside is almost complete.
