[38c IntelMac] FPS: 0?
« on: April 27, 2008, 06:56:00 pm »

I'm starting to experience some slowdown in my current game (at about 150 dwarves), so I decided to enable the FPS counter and see if I could find some ways to speed things up.  Imagine my surprise, but the counter always reports FPS: 0.  I am running on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz dual-core.  Perhaps this is a known bug just in the Mac version, but I searched the bug list and the forum and found no mention of it.  Anyone else can confirm or debunk?

Why do I like Dwarf Fortress so much?  It's hard to learn, harder to play, and downright impossible to win.

...

I mean, what's not to like?

Not a bug.  Check your readme regarding the Mac binaries.  The FPS counter doesn't work, and you're informed of this there.

It would be nice to have a working FPS counter, but I'm just ecstatic that we've got a port!

I too would like to know. I have a 2.6 ghz macbook pro and then a quad-core 2.4 ghz PC and I'm curious as to which runs the game faster. I just wish it were multi-cored!

It's never going to happen.  Toady has repeatedly stated that he will not attempt to multi-thread the game because of all of the problems it causes: things get out of sync.

I know that the FPS counter doesn't work on the Mac version.  Does the FPS limit (from init.txt) work?  It doesn't appear to work on 39e according to my testing.

I don't think any of the FPS stuff works on a Mac.  I've fiddled with it a bit on my Macbook, and it doesn't seem to make any difference.  I haven't done exhaustive testing, though.

I'm wondering if the Priority setting in Init does anything on a Mac; I've tried most of the things people recommend for increasing FPS and the only ones that seem to make much difference are turning temperature off, keeping population low and embarking on a smaller area with less cliffs/levels.
