38/39c: Kobold Caravans
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:21:26 pm »

As some background, I recently tried to upgrade to the .39 editions from .38.  However, after downloading and attempting install/unpacking over the .38 edition, the .39c edition refused to work, citing that the "Index" file had been corrupted.  Ok, whatever, I guess I'll just unpack it into a completely new folder.  That gave me the same message, so I decided to just revert to .38.  I re-downloaded .38, unpacked it over the (now) .39c files, and the game worked fine.  I have no mods of any sort installed (not even tileset mods), so there's nothing like that affecting this.

Now, to the crux of the issue: I have a Kobold caravan who wants to come and trade with me.  Evidently, this is not unique, as other people are having similar issues with formerly hostile races suddenly becoming peaceful with Dwarf encampments.  I don't totally have a problem with the potential to trade with them, but when I checked the Civ menu, Goblins were hostile towards my parent civilization, but not to me.

I'm including a link to a rapidshare file containing a .rar of my savefile, that way you can look at this and see if there's some kind of coding issue.  again, I cross-posted a thread I started in general, since this seems like it is not unique behaviour to my computer.

You unpacked over the other folder?  That's caused all sorts of wizard-civ shining ground spontaneous combustion in the past.  The "release notes.txt" file in the zip cautions against this when importing saves to a new version.

I extract each new version of the game into a unique, brand new folder, and I've gotton similar behavior from the game. Though in my case instead of kobold caravans it was goblin caravans. Interestingly enough both goblins and elves arrived at the same time, both with caravans, and both setup shop on my trade depot. I was able to use the trade depot normally and even had the option of selecting which caravan I wanted to trade with, which I thought was rather neat.

The downside is that conflict seems nigh impossible in the current version, with dorfs being at peace with everyone. My game is somewhat heavily modded, but mostly having to do with minerals, metal, and reactions. The only changes I've made to the civilizations file is to remove the babysnatcher tag and to remove clothes from goblins so my dorfs don't spend years cleaning up after a siege. I've also copy and pasted the human ethics into dorf ethics after noticing humans tend to be at war with everyone, but goblins and dorfs still refuse to fight. I've actually been at war with the elves more often than the goblins, but that was only one time in probably two dozen worlds. The only way I've been able to induce the goblins into sieging is to remove the [INTELLIGENT] tag from goblins. This causes all sorts of wars as they're unable to communicate and does cause them to siege, but it seems to break the siege behavior. They just stand around at the edge of the map doing nothing.

EDIT:
I'll try to get a save of this behavior. I didn't think to do it the first time it happened.

Goblins, omg!  :o

Included in the region file is the only edited file, in which I removed the [BABYSNATCHER] tag, added in the [SIEGE] tag which was interestingly enough missing by default, and I moved up the [PROCESS_TRIGGER....]s to 1 so things would happen quicker.

If you remove BABYSNATCHER, this sort of thing will happen.  The world gen stuff does not extend into dwarf mode, and it uses BABYSNATCHER and ITEM_THIEF to recreate the old play experience until I get there.

So is it intentional that goblins do not have the [SIEGER] tag? I have noticed several people reporting that they have not had any goblin sieges, although they have had ambushes. I wonder if putting it in will allow them to siege.

SIEGER just controls how they behave when they arrive.  They'll hang back longer if they have it.

Ahh, interesting. So [BABYSNATCHER] makes them hostile while [SIEGER] makes them siege instead of ambush? If goblins are both babysnatchers and siegers, will they have the 38c behavior of continually laying siege to the player, thus providing a persistent antagonist as well as a continual supply of iron?

I'll give this a try!

[AMBUSHER] makes them ambush.  [SIEGER] makes them hang back.  Not having either of them (like goblins) makes them charge in with large groups.  The ambushers you see with goblins are the support for snatchers.  Your population needs to top 80 to have a proper full assault by the goblins.

Is there any way to lower that number so I get sieges earlier? My computer starts lagging around that population.

Turn off weather and temperature. Disabling these two things seem to give a massive performance boost, enough that even my computer can run a 100 dorf fort at nearly 100 FPS, and my computer has a wimpy 7 year old CPU.  :(

Magma seems to be a massive CPU hog. Either that or weather is. I just turn them both off and I'm always at 90+ FPS even with a very large fort.
