I have come to slay the fearsome... hello? Anyone home?
« on: July 26, 2008, 06:53:57 pm »

I was given a quest to slay a dragon.  Feeling suicidal, I figured I'd give it a shot.  I trained up, got some decent equipment, and headed to the cave.

When I got there, the complex of caverns was very small, and the only creatures in them were an alligator, a giant rat, and a couple of mole men.  I tried a few other quests from different towns, and about half of them led me to small, almost-empty caves.  Where are the megabeasts I'm looking for?  I found a couple of giants and a cyclops, but the rest of my quests were wild goose chases.  I tried coming back at different times of day, but no dice.

Is this a bug, or is there something going on here that I don't know about?

I find that you often have to scout the area surrounding the cave before you find the beasts. If you're lucky, they'll be in the cave when you come calling. Apparently, you're not lucky enough.

As far as I can tell, they're still being generated in the area, just on the surface.  Which between the size of the maps and the tiny viewing radius everyone has, you're both wandering around missing each other.

I could be wrong, and they're just not generating on the map for some reason.  Maybe the caves are broken, and they're being spawned in an inaccessable underground chamber.  Embark with a revealer and find out?  I'll see what I can find this way myself.

What dragons and such I've seen so far have often been wandering around outside.  Look for the random junk it stole during world generation - it might be scattered about the area where the creature roams.

I've had problems not being able to find baddies in caves, only to come back during their active period (because I originally arrived at night) to find them within three tiles.  So maybe it just isn't the right time of day?

Or your caves could be too big.  In a world with big caves, I had to lie down to let the giants catch me.  Dragons shouldn't have that problem though.

I find the megabeasts hanging outside of the cave within 4-6 screens of the cave entrance, but I always find semimegabeasts in the cave.

I don't think it's a predetermined pattern, though, just a coincidence.

Just go to sleep outside the cave.  He'll find you!

Travel away then back.
The game will give you a choice of either going to the cave or to a creature. Pick creature.

Yeah, that makes him impossible to sneak up on, though.  And most of the time the megabeasts have no trouble killing me in one hit...

It would be much better if they were guaranteed to be in the cave.  As it is, they're hard to find in those winding passages - nevermind trying to hunt around outside!
