Dwarves will also preferentially build from the left, if the square immediately left of the construction is blocked then they will move clockwise around it until they find a suitable location (left, upper left, up, upper right, right etc).

This is true for all forms of digging, channeling, deconstruction and so on and so forth.


So if you have a tower like this:

W
  W
WWW

Building the red wall last should result in a Dorf happily standing outside, so long as the space immediately to the left of the wall is free. The top wall should also be the same.

Alternately, if you make one of the corner walls the last to be build, the dwarves will be forced to build it from the outside (as they can't build diagonally). They can dig diagonally however, so that trick only works for construction.
