[39d]Magma pipe directly on top of bottomless pit
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:30:23 am »

To the horror of my fps. Is this supposed to happen. In the embark map, it listed them as side by side but when I embarked, the magma pipe was created on top of the bottomless pit. Right now, lava is burning the landscape and killing all the chasm creatures.

Whups, all my starting dwarves got burned too.

Wait, what the heck? It just happened again at a different site. It seems it automatically assigns bottomless pits to gen with magma directly on it as this one still has the other magma pipe at the other end.

I had this exact problem yesterday, and was just looking through the recent bug reports to see if it had occurred to anyone else.

I had been using the new site finder to locate a site with a river, a magma pipe, flux, and a bottomless pit. I had to build a few custom worlds to satisfy the criteria, I upped the minimum volcanism (I think I had it creating worlds after about 500 region rejections with a value of 15), raised the volcano number to 150, and also tweaked a number of other settings too.

When I landed I was greated with the "a section of the cavern has collapsed!" announcement, centering the view on the pit. Having a look around, I noticed that there was a huge mass of magma just floating in the air above the pit. Unpausing caused it to rain downwards, killing the poor unsuspecting family of ratman living on one of the pit's shelves (what a way to go), some z-levels down. It wasn't a magma pipe, as the magma eventually flowed down the side of the mountain the pit was in (and down the pit itself) and evaporated, but it was strange none the less.

EDIT: I can't remember if I still have that region saved, I may have wiped the save folder that had it in. I'll check when I get back from work tonight, and upload it if I still have it, but from the sounds of umiman it looks like it might be happening fairly commonly with bottomless pits.

It could be related to some of the stuff I did to make sure magma pipes that show on embark are exposed to the surface, but I never ran into this trouble.  Seeds and embark locations that reproduce the problem would be useful here -- the exact embark rectangle is probably necessary, due to a different problem (features can look different depending on the rectangle).

All I know is the embark rectangle is 3x3. CHJees has a save in the other thread. I kinda lost mine in the recycle bin.

I've uploaded a save file here, if it helps.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=342

If the data you're after isn't in the save I can probably work out how to reproduce the bug come back with seed info, etc.

If it has nothing to do with the magma pipe and is just the bottomless pit screwing up and having lava, I've got it pinned down and can handle it for next time.  If the magma pipes themselves are screwing up, I have no idea yet.

I had this problem with 39e earlier today. It was definately a problem with the bottomless pit, the map didn't have a magma pipe on it, just a bottomless pit and an underground pond.

It was just the pit, the pipe was fine. Thanks!

i just had one, and im positive it was the pipe.. i started in an area with a chasm and magma pipe...

the chasm on the west side.. magma pipe bottom.. and the bottom of the magma pipe was chasm.. not to mention.. the side of the pipe was exposed to air (so magma flooded the land some before it all drained in to the chasm bottom)
