[39e] human siege AI - smart or stupid?
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:02:39 am »

(39e) Human siegers galloped around my fort for almost a year, even with clear path into fort. Do not know if this is intended behavior. Just recently the crossbowmen mysteriously disappeared (left?) after being harassed by zombie muskoxen - Only remaining trace of them is one crossbowman who became enraged. No corpses of crossbowmen, leading me to believe they simply left the map.

Following this save I sent out my pitiful army of 3 wrestlers and 2 marksmen - the humans attacked 1 or 2 at a time, losing many before deciding to abandon the siege. Hilariously, their cavalry would charge 1 or 2 at a time into a flurry of crossbow bolts. WW1 anyone?

Also, several of their horses gave birth during the siege, and the foals were labeled 'Hostile'; the humans attacked and killed them.

All of this may not be a bug. Mainly I am wondering why the humans (smartly or stupidly?) refused to charge into my fort for so long. I figured they would only wait for a season, not 3. If intended, bravo siege AI. Unfortunately I only had to kill a couple of suicidal idiots to fend off the entire siege.

For your amusement,

BTW, only mod is changing all soils with 'sandy' in their name to have sand.

My experience has been the exact opposite. Humans with hand-to-hand weapons approach as a solid group and take on my scattered forces (damn napping soldiers). Enemy bowmen run away and kite my fighters. If I manage to get my fighters grouped up properly the enemy scatters and converges on any stragglers. It's really been kicking my ass. I used to be able to handle a siege with a few bowmen and a fighter or three, now I barely survive with even odds.

Woah. Human sieges are working now? I was never able to get them in earlier (pre army arc) versions, no matter how much of a jerk I was.

EDIT: Heh. I downloaded the save and made some fortifications on the outside tower thing above your fort. Their soldiers are kind of annoying to kill, since they move so fast and your marksdwarves seems to prefer to shoot the horses rather than the riders.

Neither elves nor humans could be provoked enough to seige in prior versions.  That's changed with 39a.  Happy times are here. :D
