I was swimming fine a moment ago.  But when I went back into the river I started drowning.  Whats the deal?  7/7 water.

Furthermore, is there a way to save an NPC who's drowning?  Its all the NPC's fault I went into the river in the first place.

What level of swimming do you have?  I understand that novice swimmers will sometimes run into trouble and start drowning.

If they're following you, you might be able to rescue them by [T]ravelling.  Aside from that, there isn't much you can do to affect NPCs in a positive manner.

Drowned. . . in a river I had no problem swimming in.  Novice swimmer.  Lame.  All that gameplay for a lame death like that.

At least the river didn't freeze while you were in it...

2 points in swimming at character creation is the only way I've found to not drown, and even that isn't foolproof. 

Do you know if you were submerged at all during this ordeal?  Wounded?  Sitting?  Could've been a lot of things.

And as for your death:  In Dwarf Fortress, an anti-climax IS the climax.

When you went back in, did you move into the river itself or the open space over the river? Falling into water will cause your swimmer to panic and you will need a ramp or upward stairwy to get out.

Wasn't submerged, wounded, or sitting.  I moved into the open space over the water as I beleaved that implied "swimming atop" as opposed to "walking on the bottom" of the river.

Actually, that implies walking into thin air above the river.  You were probably stunned by the fall.

Cannonballs, while fun, are very deadly in this game.
