[39e] Underground river... on the surface.
« on: July 25, 2008, 07:15:24 pm »

Using a world generated in 39d, then sticking it into 39e, then using the Embark Anywhere and Nanofortress doohickies, I started on a lark on a single mountain square with, according to the embark screen (have the relevant options set to ALWAYS), one end of an underground river.

Imagine my seven dwarves' surprise when their wagon almost ended up inside the "underground" river, which is smack dab on the surface. It's definitely an underground river, too, as it ends abruptly (probably the source point) and holds lizardmen and such.

I had an underground pond exposed to the surface, once. All that was left was two tiny squares of water, the rest must have evaporated. All the critters started out in those two squares.

Anyway, there's no detriment to having your underground waters on the surface, they'll still allow you to grow towercaps from mud. Besides, it's more interesting this way, don't you think?

This isn't just exposed to the surface, though, as the top of the river is on the top z level.

Not sure how much more interesting it is this way, although it may be Fun (the losing kind) as olmmen and lizardmen and snakemen, all led by a Giant Toad, immediately set upon and dismembered all seven dwarves basically at once.

Let's see what the reclaim party can do, eh?

Okay, I'll note it down.  If somebody's got a seed and embark rectangle in a regular map it'll be faster to test, since I'll need a pre-embark world to catch the generation.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the relevant river

I did another embark, using Embark Anywhere so I could embark there; this one covered every underground river tile except for the one I had taken up before. At the very top the river is at the surface, about 5-10 tiles in (jagged edge, you see) it goes underground as the ground slopes up. The whole of the river was revealed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The very top of that map.

Thanks for the quick reply, and I hope this helps!

EDIT: Oh, and I'm going to add that on the 1x1 fortress, mist would frequently burst out from the very beginning or the river. Quite possibly that's the only thing which kept the reclaim party sane when two of them were killed in a cave-in...
