I know this sounds a bit newby but how would I change the end year of a worldgen? also how would I influence ice, mountains,water etc? the seed numbers make no sense to me

Make sure you have the latest version: 0.28.181.39e

At the main menu you're going to want to select "Design New World With Parameters", the threads and wiki articles below should get you started:

I'd also recommend the World Gen Cookbok. On the "copy someone better than me" principle.
