[39c] Workshop Task Order Mixed Up
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:50:31 am »

I've been noticing this for a while now; I have two craftsdwarf's workshops next to my bone pile, for making bone bolts and other bone items. I usually set it up as "Craft Bone Bolts: Repeat" and then "Craft Totem: Repeat" after that, so that once they're out of bones they'll clean up the skulls. The thing is, when I go back to check I keep finding the workshop has switched the orders around, with the totem on top and the bolts on the bottom! I don't have any work orders relating to craftsdwarf workshops, I micromanage them, which is how I noticed this.

Actually, when work order that has been set to repeat is finished, it is sent to back of queue, so other work orders can be finished too.

So, no bug here.

Indeed.  What ends up happening is that the two repeat jobs are interlaced sort of.  First a stack of bone bolts is made.  Then a totem is made.  Then another stack of bone bolts, then a totem, and so on.  If you run out of skulls quickly, then the totem option will disappear, and only then will you be making nothing but bolts, until your bones run out as well.

I actually prefer it this way, since you can set up smelter jobs nicely.  I put in two tasks for smelting magnetite, one task for making pig iron bars, and one task for making steel bars.  These four tasks repeat over and over as long as I have all the raw materials, making two steel bars each time through.

Ah!  I thought I was going crazy... I kept thinking I'd screwed up the job orders.  Thanks for explaining that multiple repeat orders will cycle.  That bit will definately increase efficiency.

I find it much better to have auxiliary glass furnaces with Collect Sand/R on.  That way it's easier to restrict your main (hopefully magma) furnace to specific dwarves and get things going in parallel.  You don't really want your skilled glassmaker wasting time gathering sand.
