my old machine was the PII 300.. and that worked (until the dwarves digged up an empire)

then it lags.. so I guess if you keep everything small and compact.. it'll work fast enough.

guessing it'll need higher spec with the new version though.. whenever it comes up

It would be awesome if DF had multicore support... :)

Those Pentium M chips aren't as slow as they sound, clock for clock they're about 50% faster than a Pentium 4, so it should be as fast as a 1.35ghz Pentium 4 (if such a beast exists). I've run DF on a Pentium 4 1.8ghz and that was okay until I mined out half the map and my population moved above 150.

Sorry for bumping this but I couldn't find a more recent topic on the subject.

I have DF running on an Eee PC next to me. Standard model with a 4gig SSD and 512meg of ram. In 640x300 with weather and temperature turned off I'm getting an average of 18-20 fps and it just feels slow. Task manager reports an average of 98% cpu usage constantly. I have a 2gig memory upgrade to fit when I get home tonight but I can't see that doing any good. Although the DF process is using 271meg.

Such a shame. It's a really tiny laptop and with more cpu grunt would probably have been the perfect portable DF machine.

*Edit* In full screen (800x480 with 640x300 curses font) I'm lucky to get 10fps

Use a pocket world.

I was actually surprised that DF keeps unnecessary parts of the world in memory (and those extra parts turn into wasted CPU cycles).

On my laptop, under Vista, 2GB ram, 1.73GHz Pentium M, no "official" graphics drivers (Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML). I can get 30-40FPS in a pocket world. Otherwise it's 10-15FPS for a standard sized world. The same laptop when I use XP, I can get 20-30FPS for about the first 4 seasons in a standard sized world. Oh, that's with everything turned on.

Any Dwarf Fortress can run a computer.

20 FPS is generally consiered """decent""" beyond the early game.  Population caps help keep things under control.  You'll be seeing basically 100% CPU usage anytime after the early game.

Posts like this (not Jifodus's fault) are why thread necromancy is bad. Start a new thread instead of reviving old ones!

When the original post was made, we were still in the 2d version - there were no pocket worlds.
