Yay! Now, if I could ever muster the focus to actually finish a fort, I'd know what everything was.

I've got only one question. Will we be able to see the notes in adventure mode? It takes a special view mode to see them in fort mode, but maybe they could be integrated into the wall/floor description? Like "Smooth, inscribed granite wall", or "+Detailed+, inscribed Hematite pillar".

I can't wait to confuse people in succession games.

That's what I'm wondering. Would be nice to mark certain halls and rooms etc. Or all of them...

Cewl.

I'd like to be able to put up small wooden signs, with custom text on it.

ie
-Wooden sign-
This is a crudely crafted wooden sign, on it is some text in Dwarfish.
(if a dwarf) The text reads: "Beware of goats! they be undead"

It's only dwarf mode, and only as an abstract tool.  If it were actual signs, it wouldn't be as convenient (couldn't leave them in hidden space, a dwarf would have to spend time on them).  Now, that's not to say that I don't want actual signs.  I'd like to have them support writing in the languages though, which will mean an overhaul for the name storage system (which is needed anyway, so that names don't have to be in the standard format).  The idea was to use syntax trees that get realized through grammars for each language.  What this complicates is the use of signs by player's that go beyond what's available in the language raws, but that can just be supported in addition.  But you'd also be able to write signs in dwarvish if you want, likely with an interface hell at first akin to the custom name creator screen.

just write in english then translate into an approximate rendering of whatever language the site uses, leaving out or substituting gibberish for words that are non-translatable.
(keeping the english version as the base, so that translation is always possible.)
or have it init-settable "writing in native language" ON/OFF

Possibly best to have a seperate dwarven/elvish/goblin/human translator tool.

hmm.
How about if notes can be attached to any object or tile, which can then be read by an investigating adventurer?

a sign can always be faked if notes can be made readable.

i.e. a basalt wall. [insert note]
with [note] holding the string "On it is engraved an arrow and the word 'EXIT' in dwarfish, the arrow points to the right."

could be investigated as "this is a basalt wall. On it is engraved an arrow and the word 'EXIT' in dwarfish, the arrow points to the right."

You'd still want to have visible signs though. and maybe restrict the string size.

Might even include ASCII art while on it. ;)

Code: [Select]
>>----=>
 EXIT
[code]

Doublefixed.

I'd like to see signs too. It'd be cool in Adv.Mode if you were a Human and went up to a sign, and it said "You cannot read this sign, as you are not learned in the language of Dwarves".

Heh, sure "real" signs would be cool, especially if they were created in world gen, e.g. "This way to Ūtak Drakamishor, the Glorious Capital of the Nation of the Forked Tongue --->".

But, the abstract notes as described by Toady in the above post are AWESOME! :D

AWESOME > cool.
