What type of modding can be done to a game in progress?
« on: July 20, 2008, 10:45:56 pm »

I was wondering what type of modding can be done to a game in progress and what requires the creation of a new world.

Basically there's a stuff which is set during worldgen:
Geology, creature placement, entity placement, items for entities, reactions and types of food.

So you won't get new minerals/new creatures/changes to civilization equipment/new reactions/new food types/new soils without new world.
However you may edit existing creatures' abilities and body structure, item parameters, existing reactions (without name id changes), existing minerals'/soils' parameters and existing items parameters.
Basically don't try to get anything with new id names(id name is [CREATURE:ID NAME], [ITEM:ID NAME] etc.) and don't wait for creatures to be moved to new biomes.

Interesting. I know not one thing about modding, but I just posted to say that I, too, am interested in knowing the answer to this question.

Also, this was the case several, several versions ago, but I don't believe you can change bodies without an error. I could be wrong.

I've just tried and successfully added a new bodypart "beard" to dwarf species in a new unmodded game with a pre-generated world.
It played fine. So bodies are ok to tweak, add and change.

Also I added [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] to goblins and kobolds and gave [ADVENTURE_TIER:4] to goblins and [ADVENTURE_TIER:5] to kobolds.
They are now playable so the answer for the wallish's question is yes you can.

The entirety of a creature may be edited with immediate effect in all but a single case.
This case is the body, which will not change for existing (saved) members of that race. These members will continue with old body parts.
Do not remove the body parts or this will crash the game.
Attacks assigned to specific body parts not existent will not function either, obviously.

Entity file: Most of this is for worldgen. Adding clothing or weapons should give the ability to produce them. Other options are more or less irrelevant to you.

Objects may be changed, but new objects cannot be added to the game without regenning.
