[39a] Was a child of an unknown creature
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:05:47 am »

I've noticed that many of the creatures in my large world with a defined seed number are born from unknown creatures, some with only the father or mother unknown, and some, like in this screenshot, from both parents.

That's because boring creatures get cleared out from history, so there's no data on her mother and father.

Yes, what Grue said. You can turn that feature off in init, though it might make your world gen even slower.

mmmh... The "Fellowship of oiling" and the "Steamy Communion"?

Can you really blame his parents from removing all genealogic links from the censor books?  ;D

This culling might be a bit excessive.   ::)

Better to retain previous generation in case the offspring does anything momentous or untill it dies. Either or not refer to the parents at al when they are unimportant enough to be culled.

Although unexplained pregnancies as product of 'special mood' might be cool.

It would sound a whole lot better if it said "an unknown father and an unknown mother". "Creature" really isn't the word I'd apply to parents.

I thought Toady said it was only meant to cull them if no one had a reference too them...

If it only culled when there was no reference to them, virtually nobody would be culled.  I don't have any parameters for this yet, and it is a bit harsh, but the idea was to make standard worlds playable without using more than a GB of memory during world gen.  I can change the wording in this case -- unknown creature is the phrase it uses everywhere when it fails to locate a hist fig by id number.

In this case, maybe "an unremarkable father / mother" would be better than "unknown" - unless infants are often found on doorsteps in the Dwarf Fortress world.

...then again, infants are often conceived on doorsteps, without a mate in sight, so I guess it's not entirely... unconceivable. arfarfarf  ;D

hehe.

On a related note: attacks or defences led by an unknown creature.
If a creature led an attack they have more than minor significant history even if they killed nothing...although an uneventfull attack (noone killed) is unremarkable enough to be culled IMO.

I've had dragons killed by 'an unknown creature'.

How is slaying a megabeast not important enough to be mentioned?

Do you have the params and the year the beast died?  All megabeasts start out flagged as important, and anybody that kills or wounds an important creature should also be flagged as important.  Important creatures aren't culled, so this would be a bug.

Do yellow duels' participants (during a battle) flagged as important too? Many times I have seen a leader of the campaign slain in a duel by unknown creature.

Yeah, those all have losers who are tagged as important (even more important in that case).  Params/seeds + years/events + versions would be useful here.

edit:  though with the battles, I think if the important creature loses but doesn't get injured or killed, it'll still log it, leaving an opportunity for the winner not to be flagged.  There still seems to be a problem, in any case, since you said the leader was slain.
