I buy food from the merchants, and we bring it in.  Strangely, the count for "Other" food is going up more than it should (I am buying some cheeses).  After a while, I begin to get error messages that my dwarves are cancelling the Give Food job because there is no food.  I started looking into the barrels and sure enough, I do have meat and fish and plump helmets.  yet, on my status screen, I seem to have no meet or fish or plants of any kind.

Possibly related:  My dwarven liaison is MIA for some time now.  I can't find his body anywhere, and he's not showing up under the deceased units section.

Just getting the mostly-obvious things out of the way first:

A: is the food waiting to be hauled?  It sounds like you have a large amount, and if it's all sitting prettily in your stockpiles, we can move on to...
B: Is there a path between dwarves and food?  Check intervening doors for forbiddance and such, or, say, a conglomeration of workshops such that impassable tiles... create an impasse.  If your dwarves are tromping merrily through your stockpiles, we move to...
C: Is any of the food bordered with X or XX? I'm not at all certain, but I think dwarves will turn their noses up at rotten food.

If none of the above is the problem, that does indeed sound like a bug to me.

Also, I assume this is 39c?

Cheese and food like that count as other, for ya food, did you forbid any of it?

Yes, this is indeed 39c (forgot to mention).

Checking the stocks screen, I have:
+ 36 meats
+ 0 Fish
+ 348 raw turtle (forgot to have this stuff prepared, gonna get on that)
+ 32 various plants
+ 49 prepared meals
+ 5 cheeses
+311 drinks (these were showing up properly on the status screen, though.  listing here for completeness' sake)
+ 30 various milks
+ quite a bit of tallow (I think I might actually make some soap, but I'm afraid to play this fortress lest my dwarves should all starve)

none of the above is rotten or forbidden, and there is a clear path to it, it's all in the stockpiles and none of it is sitting in the depot.  The status screen still says I have no meat, fish or plant foods, but 800+ "other" foods.  The Seeds and Drinks count appears to be accurate.

EDIT:  just did some observing.  New plump helmets placed on the stockpile were immediately eaten. I haven't noticed anyone going for some of the prepared turtle yet, but the turtle hasn't been added to the fish count yet whereas the few plump helmets were.  By "few," I mean 3.  I have about 25 more plump helmets in the stockpiles of this fortress somewhere, but those weren't counted towards the total.

EDIT again: The newly prepared turtle are going towards the fish count, newly butchered animals going towards the meat count.  Still 839 "other" foods, little of it cheeses or prepared.  I'm trying to think of what all this could be and... just noticed I had over 500 "glob," most of it un-rendered fat.

I think this has all been a false alarm.  It's what I get for not paying closer attention to my food stores. My apologies.

Once I started getting those turtles prepared, made another 5x5 farm plot, and gathered some plants from outside food became abundant again.
