[39c] Artifact construction in empty workshop
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:51:10 pm »

A gem cutter received a Secretive Mood, took over a jeweler's shop, grabbed a single uncut aquamarine, and immediately began construction without any additional items.  I assumed an artifact would be done shortly.  Months later, he went melancholy.  This was a bit unexpected, so I reloaded my last save, which was some time before his insanity.  It seems that somewhere along the way his aquamarine was misplaced, as he was now "working secretively" in an empty workshop.  I had additional uncut aquamarines in nearby stockpiles, but he wasn't seeking goods - he was working, just not on anything.

I wish I could give some explanation of how this happened, but I don't have a save from before the construction began, or from before the aquamarine disappeared, whenever that was.  This was the only jeweler's workshop in the fort and no jobs were queued up in it at the time, so it couldn't have been another dwarf taking it for a job.  Has anyone seen a similar event where a claimed item has somehow gotten removed or lost from a workshop?

The issue here is that moody dwarves just throw together anything they have in the workshop.

Normally this isn't a problem, but dumping items can lead to oddness, and screwing around with Dwarf Companion can yield ridiculously inflated artifacts (change the current required component when the moody dwarf is returning, and they'll still add the component to the workshop, but not progress down the list).
