trading 'improved'?
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:51:05 am »

My broker took his good time doing other stuff (sparring), so a noob was allowed to trade.
I got no estimated worth of the goods! (at least no total value)
OKay this seems fair, no noob could ever appraise the pile of rubbish I'm trying to push on the poor trader.
Now that my bookkeeper is competent in appraising, after making the merchant ecstatic with profits, I'd expect some indication however. (In a second round of trading)
I'll send him off and have him return as official broker, maybe she's still in the same job-instance....

I remember I could trade fine with noob traders before, albeit with a larger profitmargin for the merchants.
Even IIRC in 39a it worked fine.
What happened in the meantime, did a bug slip in unnoticed?

(Using the GB_EZ-combopack install)
Incidently does that install include a change to the init file to skip asking for window or fullscreen mode?

edit:

Okay I made the noob the official broker and now statistics are displayed as should be.
edit2: I only now realise that the individual items were not priced afteral, (in fact I mistook the weight for value).

This is how it is always been. You need Appraisal skill to see items' values, and Judge of Intent to see traders' reactions. If the dwarf acting as broker lacks these, you don't get them in the trade screen.

My experience in the past was unskilled traders don't get any values, but I hadn't had an unskilled trader since the first couple tries in my first fortress.  My trader is much busier in my current new fort, so I was stuck letting anyone trade a few times.  They both apparently picked up enough skill on the spot to read the values.  Are appraisal gains tied to the number of things in the depot or something?

Before you ask, your dwarf gets Appraisal experience when he looks at the trading menu (although I think the experience gain is limited to once per merchant visit).

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.
