hm.. this is a very odd yet cool map feature
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:39:54 pm »

my map has a mountain range, a very big one that's nigh impossible to cross.. i lost my greatest adventurer to it while he was trying to get to the world at large... i have entire civilizations totally cut off from the rest of the world.. its pretty cool.. just woundering if anyone else has had anything similar happen?

If you generate a world kinda strip-shaped, with one side a lot longer than the other, you can end up with a single world divided into numerous parts, by mountains or oceans.

I have also had times where I will get an "O" shaped mountain range and I once had a culture that started and thrived inside the valley in the middle, but was completely cut off from all outside influence.

Until the Dwarves parachute in!

Or the Elves eat a tunnel through the mountain to get to them.

I've had the "hidden valley" occur pretty much every other Standard map.

I had a valley similar to that, except two edges were actual map edges..
The middle was home to huge, 20z-level cliffs.
Perfect for towerbuilding.
I believe I once got a tower up to...  90z above ground level in that valley....

Man, that would be the perfect place to build a bridge to fling things at traders coming in. ;D

I've had dwarf civs with a town placed in hidden valleys when they expanded. Those tunnels can be pretty useful sometimes.
