Hello, I'm back
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:33:12 pm »

To those of you who don't remember me I was around in the early days of the Z-axis versions and made a number of early mods, such as Teldinmod and Dwarvus Romanus: Rome Fortress.

So!

Can anyone tell me what's changed since then? I've been puttering around with a new fortress lately and it seems there's quite a lot more that I don't recognize, such as family members, friends and it seems goblin sieges are finally working again. What other major changes did I miss?

Welcome back! I really enjoyed your mods, the only ones I ever kept and used often.

Well, Toady himself just released the new version 'coupla days ago. Added world gen options, a lot more history is involved now. I would recommend checking the dev log, at least the more recent stuff.

Ooh, you're in for some lovely stuff mate.

First off, elves have turned into massive screaming barbarian hordes that devour the corpses of the fallen.  They die by the hundreds, but they fight by the thousands.

Goblins have become much more tolerant of the other races, due to their new ethical values.  They believe that all matters should be settled by the individuals involved, and that the ruling power really shouldn't have anything to do with it.  Their hobbies include murder and stretching the skin of conquered foes over their dark towers.

Also, they're kleptomaniacs when it comes to babies.

Megabeasts tend to die out in short order, most often at the hands of some kobold or another who will go on to live a long and uneventful life before dying of old age.

Crocodiles terrorize riverside provinces.

We also have roads with Picasso-inspired bridges, tunnels that may or may not be dead ends and that may or may not breach THAT WHICH NO MORTAL SHOULD KNOW.  Also, bring extra food and drink, it's a long walk.

Dwarves will now realize that they can build things from the direction closest to them.  Also, mass-designate constructions, dump, melt, forbid, and conceal.

Oh yes, and we get a map editor.

Dwarves also build tunnels between fortesses, now (Edit: Kagus got to this first, aww...) This was pretty cool; the one I walked through met a chasm half way, and I had an epic battle against a gremlin (size three custom race, no weapons. It was epic alright.)

You can now get world gen to spit out anything you want, even if you have to go down to editing individual squares. Most of the time, just setting some preferences and limits will do the trick, though.

Dwarf mountain-homes, while still huge and hard to navigate, have some semblance of structure and order. You even stand a good chance of finding living people in them! Lastly, caves are much smaller now (optionally; it's a world gen setting.) But all of my targets have been outside, so far...

I mostly find the dwarves milling around outside, which is stupid. Dwarves should hate being outside and only scouts/militarydwarves and outdoorsdwarves should spend most of their time in the sun.

Wow, that's a lot of changes.

Now I either go through all the devlogs and the wiki to try and figure out things before I start a new fort..

Nah! Fortress time!

On that note, is it standard to get entire goddam layers of obsidian? I had a fort a few days ago with a magma tube and literally about every floor was solid obsidian, I was swimming in ridiculous riches. After 2 years when the huge caravans (6 wagons and 4 mules! Woo!) started coming in I never had to farm, fish, or brew again, I just would buy out their entire caravans with crafts. Back in my day we were lucky to get 1 or 2 veins of it!

Obsidian forms layers. I guess it didn't do that before. Although obsidian is good, you won't find much precious in it. You need sedementeary layers for that. Look for rivers to find 'em.

Before z-levels had large, crazy cliffs, with large flat areas on top of 'em. You could come upon an isolated mesa with an entire forest on it, but no ground access. All you needed to do was wall-off the above layer to protect from ranged weapons, and you are golden.

Now things are a bit smoothed. There are a few cliffs a few z-levels in height, but nothing particularly large. You will get slopes instead of sheer faces. Also, regions are less seperated. You can get a few ocean tiles on a land tile, instead of a cmall coast on ocen tiles next to land tiles. Sometimes, lone tiles in the middle of an ocean will be surrounded by coasts instead of just a large flat region with coast tiles on the ocean tiles surrounding it.

Whenever you retire and adventurer, he/she can be recruited as long as you are more skilled then them. So theoretically you can make a squad of ten x-bowmen who will follow you about, causing mass killings. Or perhaps blunt weapon people to cause enemies to fly everywhere. Or bladed weapons, for a similar effect except with more limbs and blood.

Or even a squad of lashers. I havent tested it yet, but I wonder if throwers will be death machines...

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.
