Artifact Worship
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:42:40 am »

My most recently created artifact,  Had me wondering about the possibility of artifact worship. I did a quick search and found some mentions of this as suggestions here and here.  The threads they are in are old, hence the new thread, but at least I am not the only one who would want to see this.  Searching the dev log for artifact didn't bring up anything about artifact worship either.

Here is that said artifact

Quote
Ineth Akmeshtob, Woodcutter has created Girethugosh osustokir, a Raw Adamantine idol!

Girethugosh osustokir, Imagehollows the Tame Elder, a Raw adamantine idol

This is a Raw Adamantine idol.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encrusted with Raw adamantine and encircled with bands of Adamantine.  This object menaces with spikes of Cinnamon grossular.  On the item is an image of a turtle in Raw adamantine.

Being an idol and worth 1284000 monies, I think it is valuable enough and logical enough to be a symbol of worship.  Perhaps artifact worship might be tossed into another arc, but it would pave the way for more religion based conflict and plots.(Especially if artifacts are created in world gen.)

The only problem I have with your suggestion is the title (and first few sentences) are written as if you want the Dwarves to worship the artifact itself (So the artifact would probably appear in the god section)

Then in the last bit I am to understand that you mean the artifact is to become an object of worship.

However instead you put that artifacts of worship should be treated as objects of worship...

Meaning in the end you made a needless suggestion as most artifacts should be treated as the object they stem from. If I were to take you litterally.

So I have to ask you to rephrase what you meant

Maybe an artifact of exceptional value and significance can be claimed by a god.  If a dwarf worships Zasist, the god of patience and fortitude who often takes the form of a turtle creates an artifact like the OPs, the Zasist would claim that artifact.  Or the creator would dedicate it to Zasist and it would become part of his domain.

Kind of long range, but great flavor for the Religion Arc.

And this thread also brings the wonderful concept of artifacts being created outside our dwarf fortresses.  Over 1050 years, the world should have more artifacts than those created in a brief span by our fey peasants.

I also like the idea of all artifacts being capable of being a worship symbol no matter what it is.
