Tilesets.
« on: August 20, 2007, 11:13:00 pm »

I designed this tileset to be like curses_640x300.bmp but with the flaws fixed. Whether or not I succeeded is another matter. If you have any comments/suggestions/questions/criticism/etc, please give them.

It is 720x225 and 9x9.

This is my other tileset. Obviously, it is very unfinished. Again, if you have any comments/suggestions/questions/criticism/etc, please give them.

It is 1280x400 and 16x16.

I like the square tiles and regular lettering of the first tileset, and think it a solid-looking choice for a 640 pixel-wide screen.  Nice work, Savok!

The first one is 720x225 not 640x200.

Also, I've found that the resolutions 720x576 and 720x480 but not 720x540 (which would have a 4:3 ratio) work.

I have this aversion to detailing walls since I think they look ugly, visually. Even with decorations off they're still kinda ugly... Same with floors. I'm trying to figure out a nice way to build a tileset where the floors and walls look good both as smoothed and detailed... So far no luck. Maybe one of you more experienced people have an idea?

If you used a black background instead of a purple one, I think that would work.

I don't know if it would mess up anything else, though.

D'oh! Why didn't I think of trying that?

I'll get back with results later.

Here's my modified 16x16 tileset. I've added black backgrounds on some tiles, and the result so far is looking good (well... enough) with two caveats. The capital letter O is given a black background due to their use as pillars, making them look bad when used in windowtitles. And the floor tiles don't look too good. I'll have to come up with a better design.

Don't save tilesets as .jpg, ever! It completely ruins them.

Try .png or .gif. Even .bmp would be better.

That's funny. Where'd it get made into a jpg? Odd...

Anyway, I've made a bunch of improvements since that version, so no great loss.
