Not a bug or a forgery, just an idiosyncracy.  The giant bat was wrestling some one, pulled their hat off, and is still holding it and thus using it as a weapon.

I saw something similar with a giant scorpion holding a shoe in one claw.

I once had a female adventurer attacked by a naked cyclops waving a thong around in one hand.  Needless to say, the mental image left scars that are with me to this day...

I fought a giant once, and he grabbed my weapon.  I tried to get it back, but lost it and in the next round he cut my head off.

Which is why I was suggesting to allow natural attacks along with improvised or special weapons.
