Animals spawning in my bedrooms!
« on: July 06, 2008, 07:39:53 pm »

What.the.hell.

First an alligator (or was it a croc?) apparently spawns in one of my bedrooms.  It manages to kill four dwarves before I even figure out what the hell is going on.

Fast forward. A "giant olm" spawns, again in a bedroom, and does exactly the same thing.

One difference in this game from my previous games is I am trapping live land animals.  Did I unwittingly capture a baby olm, someone took it as a pet, then it grew up?

It may or may not have been the same bedroom.  I'd say at least the same 8 bedroom section.

Edit: Just thought I'd add.. There was something else in common between the two attacks.  I had just seized the elven market both times.

/Animals? In MY bedroom? It's more likely than you think

Very odd... how close is the cave lake or river to your bedrooms?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

...
cave lake?

...

Well you know, now that I think about it, I did once get warned about a damp tile.  I thought.. huh.. that's odd.. there's nothing here at all!

I wonder where that tile was.

Edit:

Oh shit. It's right below the group of bedrooms with the issue, and I have a frigging staircase leading to the tile.

Edit Again: I dug out the bottom... YOU HAVE DISCOVERED AN UNDERGROUND LAKE WITH LITE DOOM

Clearly there's so many animals in the lake that they're entering your bedrooms via osmosis.

Creatures in hidden features can move diagonally up or down.

The Giant Olm will be able to move up to the staircase even though you haven't been able to find the river yet. Also dwarves on the staircase can "See" the Giant Olm and will be scared of it. It is probably a bug.

Man, I really need to play without regional prospector.  I love the idea of just randomly stumbling upon a freaking monster-spawing lake right under my bedrooms.

Or it could one of those freaky dwarf things.  Like ESP but for dwarves and animals...

Even with regional prospector I've stumbled across crazy features.  I had dug like three areas for my tombs, but always ran into silt or something else that ruined it.  I finally dug so deep I'd never find anything like that, and hit the lower-level of a cave pond.  Suddenly my legendary miner is drowning and being accosted by mobs of olms, olmmen, frogmen, snakemen, all kinds of stuff.

This made me picture an alligator slowly oozing through the floor, headfirst, and emerging with a loud *plooooorp.*

That sounds like something you'd see in a really trashy horror movie. :P

ALLIGATORS - They're out there, and they can't be stopped.

Are cephalopods in the game yet? Octopuses can do that mess, and they may manage to kill you even out of their element (well, a blue ring wouldn't be fun )

Omega 2, yours was good too.
