The odds are stacked.
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:09:55 am »

Copied from my "how to deal with demons??" thread.

WE HAVE VICTORY!!! My dwarfs saw the oncoming tentacle demons and asked "They have so many arms! How can we possibly hope to out-fight that!"

and then the mechanic did speak:

"There are 50 of us. Together, we can make a monster with even MORE limbs. Now, you put your leg there, and I'll stand on him, and..."

EDIT: This goes on for serveral pages worth. I had a military of 53, and there were only a few stragglers, so roughly 50 are in that one tile.

So.. many.. arrows.

Lo and behold, the biggest dwarven dogpile ever! I bet if someone jumped off it, he'd get at least two broken legs.  :P

How did you get them all (including your marksdwarves) in that single square?

A DF tile is as large as it needs to be to contain its contents.  However, this doesn't affect other tiles, nor does it make tiles seem smaller or larger in comparison to a tile.

This is why heads in Dwarf Fortress tend to end up smashed or exploded.

It probably wasn't his idea.  I've had a stack of 20-30 dwarves being idle (no job or on a break) on the same square in the middle of a 3-wide tunnel before.  Nothing special about the square, it's not in any 'room'.

I had them all as a massive squad which was stationed there, then I broke them all into squads of 1, and then I ordered all those squads to be stationed there again, just for good measure.

Also, they were ALL supposed to be dual-crossbow marksdwarves, its just that crossbow production was such that some of them went without a crossbow for long enough they became wrestlers.

If you're interested, the final score was:

Demons: 31 (all) dead.
Dwarves: 12 dead, plus four war unicorns for a total of 16 losses, not counting mules and other worthless scum.

Let me guess: there was a constant stream of arrows flying out of the single square?

I guess that's what a crossbow-wielding Hecatonchires would look like.  ;D

I think it was two dwarves taped together to make one giant dwarf.

Yep. If the cursed demons hadn't had stealth (which meant they could get close before being defeated by the power of 50 spot checks) we woulda mowed them down so quickly
