I have a pump! and i cannot use it...

I just built a pump over a underground cavern i flooded. the pumper is valiantly pumping but nothing is happening. please tell me how to use the pump, the wiki gives an explanation i cannot get my head around. please enlighten me!

Make sure the end its pumping from has water one z-level down from it, also make sure it actually *IS* pumping. Use a windmill if possible, but if you do that then the windmill needs to be in an area designated as 'outside', so dig out a 3x3 channel above it until its designated as outside on the windmill. Sorry if I'm being unclear.

yea it is over a cavern of water but still nothing comes out. help?

you're sure its draining from the right way? I had that problem when starting with pumps. Also, is it being powered by something?

powered? well there is a dwarf turning it (and becoming tougher by the second) but i decided not to create a windmill or water wheel. which side does it drain from?

Water -> Dwarf end of pump -> other end of pump

The water needs to be 1 z-level down. The floor between the water and the tile above it / behind the pump also needs to be removed.
