So Many Aquifiers, So Little Stone.
« on: July 04, 2008, 12:14:38 am »

I'm in a human town, the capital, and I'm trying to get down to the rock and ore. Unfortunately, there is an aquifier. I have no rocks, so no mechanisms. I have plenty of wood and blocks. Any ideas how to get past the aquifier?

Pumping!  Pump the water off the edge of the map, and try to wall off a small staircase before it fills again.  Even though you don't have mechanisms, you have dwarf power (which is notoriously unreliable).

Or you could wait for winter and hope it gets cold enough to freeze; less labor-intensive, but even more unreliable (it might not freeze at all).

Okay, thanks. Too bad not long after posting this my miner tried to kill himself by crawling up a 1 z-level ramp and jumping off instead of jumping into the 7+ z-level pit I had. The carpenter went crazy. And the Gem Cutter went berserk, killing the 20-some odd recruits(All immigrants) he had around hi,. So, the fort is now dead... time to restart project Apocalypse.

An easier sink for water is the same aquifer you're pumping out of. Just be sure to leave enough room if you have more than one layer of aquifer to get through.

It works too, from memory. I suppose you will need enough rock to make one mechanism, but if you know you are embarking on a map with an aquifer, its cheap and easy to bring a rock with you. :)

Just stone blocks, can't make mechanisms from them =/

You could bring stone with you on embark, they're pretty cheap. Or buy them from the caravan (they're cheap here too but have a pretty good weight meaning they can't bring that many of them).

You can do it without mechanism, just hook an axle directly to your waterwheel: its just hard to turn off :P

this video shows the method of how to do it, and it should still work. however, instead of pumping the water into a wall, you need to pump it into channeled aquifer: this instantly gets rid of the water
