Why wont it collapse?
« on: July 03, 2008, 01:58:10 am »

Gday,

Ive got a problem, my liason and caravan are stubbornly spawning on an inaccesiable (previously accesible but channeled off) ledge with a bronze colossus on the other side.

Now Ive tried building a staircase to them but as soon as I breach the upper crust the colossus strikes (doors where bloody useless here). Instead I tried to mine out a bit underneath a choke point on the ledge to try and make it collapse to bar the colossi allowing me to rescue the now starving liason (caravan left).

Heres the question: How bloody big do I need to get to make a collapse. i tried the stock standard 10x10 which people have said should make it collapse with no avail when teh supports where pulled nothing happened. Now ive just been enlarging and enlarging not caring who dies but it STILL wont collapse.

Here an image of the giant cave http://img235.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wontql5.png

How can I make this collapse?

Youv been reading some old information. Back in the 2d version if you make a room that big it would colapse but not any more. What you need to do is destroy all the ground its touching. This includes the walls around it.

If you want your miner to survive as well, I would recommend building a support before digging out all the walls and attaching that support to a lever. Then when you are ready to cause the collapse, just pull the lever and enjoy the fireworks!

Or have your only miner be a guy nobody likes anyway. But then you might lose a valuable pick.

Do I have to remove the roof of the z-1 level to cause the collapse? I cant go up there because of the hullking colosus of doom (who already ripped off the arm of the miner dwarf who rescued my liason).

Well, if you're not opposed to cheating you can get rid of the collosus by grabbing tweak and using that to kill it.

Where's the fun in that though? x3

Dwarven problem solving! I suggest using magma. Loads of magma.
The only good dwarven solution to a problem must. involve. magma.

And drinks! Lots of drinks!

Seriously, I would get dwarf companion, make someone level 100 swordsdwarf and armour (Or sheild) user, then watch the carnage. Then, simply set the person back to being some random joe.
The non-cheaty way would be to make a long bridge like thing from across the way, build somthing over the collosus, then have someone remove construction and let it fall. BOOM!

That way(How you have it, not that idea in general) tends to kill the dwarf performing the murder of the collosus. Also, does the weight of the material that makes a cave in effect the result, or is a rock bridge as damaging as a wooden bridge?

You're right. building a door and forbidding entry right next to it on the west may help.

Better plan: Build a bridge out to the colossus, so that the colossus has to step on a specific floor tile to get to your dwarves. On this tile, put a cage trap.

But thats simple, with DF the plans MUST be overcomplicated or they simply will not work! ...okay, they will but they don't make for as good of stories.

Example, which is a more interesting end to a story?

"....Then the elf flew into the collosus, pushing him off a cliff into a pit. And THAT is how we caught the collosus chained in the nursery for all the children to see."

OR

"...And then he walked into a cage trap.  And THAT is how we caught the collosus chained in the nursery for all the children to see."

1 - Mine enough stone to make Stonehenge look like a pebble.
2 - Build a Siege Workshop.
3 - Build siege parts.
4 - Build a Catapult facing the Colossus.
5 - Pick a random idler and get him/her to man the Catapult.
6 - ???
7 - Profit!

The Colossus will die. Eventually.  ;D
