Traps and how they work

You need a mechanism for the lever and the thing being levered, I'm almost positive.  Also, dwarves don't seem to like to use things that aren't in stockpiles, so that could be a problem.

Yup. You need at least three Mechanisms to get anything lever/pressure plate related working: one to build the Lever/Plate, two to link-up the Lever/Plate to the target. Plus a Furniture Stockpile, otherwise the dwarves might not recognize the Mechanisms you've already built (happened to me, maybe it's a bug?).

Any mechanisms should do. When you link the trigger to the item, it shows a list of the free mechanisms you have. So you select two items from that list and your mechanic will connect everything for you.
