Water flowing and gravity
« on: July 03, 2008, 05:08:23 pm »

I just built a well a couple z-levels down into my fort and after seeming to work fine for a few minutes, it suddenly overflowed. I wasn't sure if something was wrong or if water will always flow as high as it can until it reaches the level of its source...is that what was going on?

This would be good to know so that I won't try building anymore wells in the depths.

Water will try to flow upward to meet its source level. Also, there is what we call a "u-bend bug" that sometimes causes the uprising water to never stop.

An alternative is to dig all the plumbing, get your water down there below your underground well, then close the floodgate in your plumbing so no more water comes in. Of course, your well water will be stagnant, but dwarves don't care so long as it comes from a well. And if you get low on water in your storage tank, open and close your floodgate again. Remember to put your lever for controlling it high enough that it won't be underwater if something happens and the floodgate opens.

The U-bend bug has been fixed, from what I hear. I've certainly never triggered it.

I've heard people complaining about it for version .38c anyway.

I tried to trigger it with a pond, after hearing that the u-bend bug could make infinite water. Didn't work.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Make sure you have enough booze and you won't even need a well, aside from keeping injured dwarves alive.
