If siege operation would be nice if it was a semi-military job, like the fortress guard.
They would not engage in combat, but they will operate siege engines until the enemy gets REALLY close.
Oh, and you can armor so they don't get hacked and sniped so easily.

I, personally, like the siege operators being non-military.  I do wish they understood the difference between 'near' and 'accessible'.

I'd also like to see them not be restricted inside during the 'soldiers only'

(I about half wish the marksdwarves behaved that way too)

Thus the idea for making them semi-military positions.

In other words, militia. Auxilary non-career soldiers. I did a post about that in the ye olde armoury thread. you can probably search it up.

Yuppers, I agree with the need to reform siege operators. I rarely use them for this reason (with one fort having to wait out sieges because I thought the siege operators would be able to handle them. I was very wrong!).

I agree that siege operating isn't a civilian job. Is tank driving a civilian job?
I like the comment that siege operators also need to be able to wield a weapon in case combat becomes hand-to-hand. Therefore, putting SGE or any sort of siege option in the weapons menu probably won't help.

I usually don't play DF for warfare or unit-to-unit combat, but I can see now how much the army arc is going to change and improve things for DF. Right now the military is very linear, with roles ranging from melee fighters to ranged fighters (just TWO options!!). This is pretty unbalanced compared to all the various roles civilians can perform. I want to make a shout out to all the suggestions for:
- diversified military leadership structures and leadership bonuses
- more group commands for military
- not needing to micromanage when units are on duty and off duty (can they just not work it out for themselves, or at least work it out according to a ratio you set???)
- combat priorities
- military "nobles"
- greater civilian control during sieges

Do people think mechanics need to be reformed into military, too? Discuss.

Now interested to see what the Army Arc gives us,

FoM.

Fortunately this is already listed as a bug:

000039 □ [dwarf mode][combat]   melee opponents shouldn't scare siege operators through fortifications

So hopefully there's a fix coming sometime.
