I've modded a race of mine so that goblins are their friends, and the Goblins at the tower I started on are fine with my people and so is their demon, but I've been attacked with demons from the pits before, is there any true difference between the two?

Think of goblin demons as a sort of 'tame' or 'civilised' demon, while demons from the pits are just hell-bent on the destruction of the entire world.

Actually the goblins are "tame", not Demons. But the demons are different by their nature.
The goblin-ruling ones are definitely outcasts.

I was referring to the demons that rule goblins. Although, outcast demon has a nicer ring to it than civilised demon.

Or maybe they're agents from DF's Hell going after souls.  Maybe goblins are ambitious dwarves who turned to demon worship to gain power and have become twisted over the years.
