Channels, aqueducts and wells...
« on: August 15, 2006, 06:33:00 am »

I wonder if there is a way to remove channels, fill them to make them regular floor again. The reason I ask is what happened in my fortress not long ago. Frogmen jumped out of the well and attacked my poor sleeping dwarves, who promptly killed them. Then, they cleared the blood and dragged all the corpses into the refuse pile. All but one, the one that was directly in the well. They treat wells like obstacles it seems, so seeing as none of the cowards were willing to fish the frogman corpse from the well, I ordered the well dismantled.

This worked just fine, the corpse went to the refuse pile, but the well cannot be rebuilt on the same spot! It appears that wells are channels (makes sense) and when a well is destroyed, the channel remains. And you cannot build on channels. On aqueducts too, whatever these do. Do aqueducts work like channels only better looking?

So, is this how it's supposed to be, or should we be able to undo channels somehow?

At the moment, once a channel is there, it's there to stay unfortunately.

Wait, you mean you have to direct water to wells?

That would explain a lot. Though thats also going to make their placement a lot trickier. :/

Is that what aquaducts are for?  Heh, I was just starting to wonder what they did, I keep almost-building them by miskeying a lot  :D

Be nice if someone would just tell us what aqueducts do.

I think they're meant for helping you to get water across the chasm if you want to do any farming there.

Filling channels comes with re-walling, whenever that's done.  Wells are always filled with water, and maybe other things.  Yeah, aqueducts are for moving fluids across the chasm and the river, etc.

Okay, this probably falls under the 'retarded newbie' category, but how do you make a well in the first place? I assumed it would be considered masonry, but I don't see an option for it in the workshop.

Edit: And as long as I'm asking stupid questions, how do you make wooden logs? Not with a carpentry workshop, apparently.

Ok, how about that other thing then? Wells are treated as obstacles so dwarves won't pick a (say) corpse that's in (on) the well. Dismantling it is the only way?

I think that's probably the situation right now -- the same with all of the workshop blockages and so on, and bolts getting jammed in fortifications.  I think there was an attempt at making items slide to adjacent unblocked squares, but I don't think it came to fruition yet.

Besides, corpses should probably fall in the well, fouling the water, then you could use something like a fisherdwarf to get them out or something...  or maybe not a fisherdwarf.

I would get a child to do it.  Except the child would probably just spend most of the time poking him with a stick.
