Well... if you want something a bit scientific...

Most dwarves who are married come from immigration (because for some reason beyond anyone's knowledge... Our Forts seem to be against marriage or something)

They have a baby every 2 years

A Dwarf lives around 150 years

A Dwarf becomes capable of babies at 12 years of age (or 13)

Assuming they got married at age 50... that is 50 babies per couple. Lets assume it is half that... that is 25 babies per couple... now lets take away 15 of them because Goblins snatched them... That is 10 babies

So at least 1 in every 5 dwarves needs to be married in the mountain home in order for them to at least break even. This also assumes that a large percent of babies will get stolen and that they will have a baby every 4 years.

Given that each wave of dwarves usually has a couple (or someone with a child), they seem to meet this bare requirement.
