Noob question about map resolution
« on: August 12, 2007, 10:35:00 pm »

Is there a way to show more than 25 characters of height?

Reason I ask is that this very low value makes it difficult to plan nearly as well vertically as horizontally.

There is currently no changing the character dimensions for the game. It's always 25x80 or whatever. In a future patch Toady will take care of this hopefully, but for now he has more pressing concerns.

You will get used to it   :)

Another noob uestion (to avoid spamming threads):

I've lost both my original miners to the initial cave river flood, but am bound and determined to survive anyway.  While two other dwarves quickly grabbed the picks when I told them to mine, I have not been able to convince my carpenter/woodcutter to pick up the axe he dropped (for reasons unknown).

I know he's set to chop wood, and I've plenty of trees marked.  He's not doing anything else, has no injuries mental or physical, and I even tried moving the axe to a weapons storage right at the entrance and setting the dwarf to "fight with axes".  Nothing I know how to do is working.  Any suggestion?

Is your woodcutter one of the dwarves you set to mine? Mining and Wood Cutting can't be enabled on the same dwarf (enabling one disables the other automatically).

No, he isn't.  The only jobs he's set to do is chop, saw, and haul.  Turning off hauling didn't have any effect.

Your unit is probably "on break". Which happen more and more often if you don't have drinks available for your dwarves.

Sadly, this isn't the answer; not only do I (still) have plenty of booze, but he has no job at all.  And, no, he's wide awake before you ask.  Oh, he will gladly haul stone, detail floors, and various other tasks more-or-less useless to me right now, but he won't pick up that axe for love or money.  He's walked by it, stood by it, and probably peed on it, but using it?  I can't find the button to press for that.  I've even tried to assign other workers to wood-cutting, but they'd all rather do nothing than chop wood.

That's odd.  The only thing I can think happened is that some dwarf claimed possession of it and nobody else wants to touch it.  I don't quite remember if things that dwarves claimed are moved to stockpiles/used by other dwarves, but I don't think they do.

Edit:  You can check for this, just look at the item and it should say if someone owns it, and who the owner is.

Make a weapon stockpile. Once the axe is put in it, toggle woodcutting off/on and he should go pick it up.

If the axe isn't put in the stockpile, then someone probably already claimed the axe.

..and make sure you designated some wood to actually be chopped.

Unfortunately, the axe wasn't owned by anyone, among the first things I tried was in fact to put the axe into a stockpile and toggle the dwarf's wood-cutting, and the first thing I checked was that trees were selected for chopping.

I have given up that dungeon as a bad job.

... And this was how my next fortress bit it.  Pull that lever at your peril

The water went into the farm, out of the farm (through an old, but still connected) set of floodgates, into the floodplain, over the frickin' bridge and flooded both sides of the fort.  Insane.
