Created world, cannot play
« on: June 26, 2008, 03:36:44 am »

So, the other day (5 minutes ago) I thought: Well, playing with my fort is nice and all, but what about playing an adventurer for a change?
I happily create a pocket world and return to the main menu. No "Start Playing" option. Bizarre.
But hey, maybe all the humans, dwarves and elves are dead in some sort of apocalyptic deathwar against the goblins. I don't know, I don't have the map.

So, I try again, this time watching carefully to see if some dwarves still live. They do, and I return to the meny, expecting the "Start Playing" option.

Oh, the horrors and gnashing of teeth! It is not there!
What do I do?

Tl;dr: Created world, doesn't work. Am unhappy.

Have you checked the /data/saves folder to ensure that the world's folder and all its files are there?  It sounds like something would be wrong either way, but this could at least help indicate where the problem happened.

Do the region folders each have multiple files?  Something along the lines of several art-image-# files, multiple feature-#-# files, a boatload of unit-# files, and a world file?

If software was real world, then it'd be something equivalent of hitting a nail with a hammer and having a building collapse on the other side of town.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

Well, I opened region2:

It has about 75x4 art_image files (approx. 300) and a world file. Nothing more.

Compared to region1 (the one that works):

1 art_image
2 feature
1 site
6 unit
1 world.sav

Update: Now the whole game isn't working!
When I double-click on the thing, it first asks me the fullscreen question. I press no.
Soon after, a message appears:

FATAL ERROR
Main index file missing/corrupted. The file "index" must be in the "data" folder. Make sure DF decompressed into it's folders properly.

The problem is, the file "index" IS in the data folder.
What do I do?

I'd suggest extracting the game into another folder temporarily from the original download, starting over with a fresh install basically, and find out if it runs fine from there.  If that works, then you need to figure out what it is that has been corrupting your files, because it sounds likely that it would happen again.

You mean the save or the whole game?

Also, I don't have any fancy mods, so whatever is the problem must be... THE GAME ITSELF.
DUN DUNN.

Yes, something corrupted your game files.  Redownload them to a different installation location and try again.

If something unknown corrupted your files, and it is not just DF that is affected, this is a bad bad sign for your HD.

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

"I thought it was the size of the others!" said Vanon. "I guess it was just standing further away!"

Where I work we make a product that has a large metallic piece called a "head".  This head is on an X-Y table and is able to move around in 2 dimensions on it.  Anyway a permanent magnet on one of our models caused the head to rest (upon power down) in an unusual location.

This was labeled a software bug.

So according to where I work, this is indeed a bug in DF.  ::)

Well, I downloaded a new DF, and it works, so I guess I'm okay now.
