When a creature who breaths water loses access to water they "drown" in the air. Were you on a warm map where ponds would evaporate?

Maybe the wording in that case should be "the tigerfish has suffocated?"  I've usually heard that used to describe what happens to fish; 'drowned' just sounds wrong.

It does sound kind of wrong, that is most likely the reason this sort of thing keeps coming up

another thing that strikes people as odd is the message 'the (fish here, most likely carp) stands up'.

It really bugs me that you can lie down/stand up in water for some reason. Just gives the impression of a dwarven soldier taking a stroll through the ocean.

When I think about standing/lying down in water, I think of the swimming pose; standing up would be like a sort of "treading water" kind of swimming, and lying down is backstroke or frontcrawl or whatever.

But when you "lie down" in water you should move faster. The DF suggests an opposite thing.

Thats how I get around it. I take "standing up" in water as a euphemism for getting into a swimming pose, whilst "lying down" is just floundering.
It would be nice if you could dive from a height into water rather than bellyflop all the time, but it's hardly the most pressing issue.
