Trouble understanding the preventing of cave ins

Hey there. I am having trouble understanding the preventing of cave ins in the wiki.

One part is obvious, do not completely mine the area underneath another, it will fall on you. Got it.

But do I watch out for otherwise? What are the best ways to prevent cave ins? Is the wiki implying that if mining underneath my homes I am more likely to cause cave ins unless I avoid clearing out matching spaces or something? If that's the case, what about my homes' relationship to the ground above them?

I am bit worried, it almost sounds if I should have caused a cave in already, so clearly i am not sure what is going on.

In the current version, cave-ins are unlikely to occur unless you actively try to create them (or otherwise are doing something really reckless involving digging out channels). 

Basically, a block of stone will fall if it is not connected to anything else from above, below or one of the sides.  Otherwise it will stay suspended.  So unless you're planning to have a giant block of granite hovering above your living quarters, you should be fine.

Edit: Yeah, and if you did want a giant block of granite suspended above them, all you would need to do it leave it attached by a single tile and it would basically hover there.

This will undoubtedly be changed in future versions.

The wiki probably hasn't been updated properly.  A cave-in won't occur unless a section is COMPLETELY cut off from the surrounding tiles.  A single floor tile is enough to support a gigantic hanging fortress.

As long as their is 1 tile that is either ground, wall, constructed floor, or bridge, stairs, etc. next to the whatever you want to not fall, it will not fall. It cannot be diagonal. A wall directly below will count as support.

You can mine under any buildings completely and they will not fall. Though if there is a mishap and there is a collapse, and only floors are under the collapse... Well you'll be loosing a few floors of floors.

This will fall.

+ = floor
. = open space

In all reality you could make a super structure the entire size of the largest embark area, held up by only a single support. Some people use this to make a fortress of doom!

I thought bridges and stairs didn't supported anything.

I just tested it: bridges do not seem to support anything, but stairs do.

Bridges don't support, but stairs do. That's easy enough to test - build an up staircase in the middle of nowhere, a down staircase above it (which is supported by the up staircase...) and then a floor next to the down staircase. None of it will collapse.

Grates will also not support.  I discovered this attempting to build a 9-square area of grates.

I assume metal floor bars will also (also) not support, but I've done no testing there.

Things that support: floor, wall, stairs.
Ramps and fortifications do not support anything.

Various constructions like bars and grates do not support anything. It's sad when you're trying to make a large grate-floor.
