modder application?
« on: June 30, 2008, 03:20:35 pm »

If I had the programming knowlege to do this I would, but DF modding is as far as I can go...so I need help.

Looking around, I highly doubt that it currently exists, or I'd have it.

What?
A very user friendly, windowed application that gives the user access to all the tags and the ability to make mod packs for creatures, metals, and other things in a matter of minutes rather than hours of hand modding...

What it does?
Makes files in the raw file for modding DF that can be done via a pleasent checklist with rollover descriptions of what the tag does, including a create/create another object button for generation a text doc for the object.
Tabs for seperation of items/bodies/creatures/matgloss/entities/

Why?
Because I was thinking of how hard it was to modd in things by hand, having to look through the wiki like mad.

There's a Mod Base which is easy to use and quite handy.
While it doesn't create all the files for you, it allows you to create files via different conditions and also has a lot of advantages.
From now on I make every my mod compatible with it. It is the future. =)

I have a small programming experience (1,5 university courses, then I changed programming to physics; also I worked with python for Civ4 mods).

Mod Base is on top of the Modding forums.

Don't be too quick to advertise my prog though, Deon, it still has bugs aplenty. Mostly due to me typing on autopilot, and forgetting some base principles of coding - like that fact that you don't want to delete elements from an array you reference from a for loop. That specific one was the problem with the tag deleter function, why it was ineffective on multiple tags.
I'm now doing a rewrite of the subs that handle all this looping, I think that wiping tags and entries clean can be a better way than outright deletion, but it'll take a while. I'm also going to lose internet from the 3rd, the ISP's doing some maintenance on the servers. At any rate, the source is bundled with the program, and I give you leave to edit anything you want and distribute it. I'll update myself when I'm done rewriting.

It's in both of their signatures.  And it's being kept up near the top of this very same forum too.

Now that we're in these shiny new forums, are we still going without the everpotent Sticky?
