This is a perfect example of the phenomenon known as topic decay. A topic starts out on-track, but then the reason the topic was created is resolved. Then, an only partially related non-topic is created and over some time via a half-life rule, the topic's relevance to the original post decays at regular intervals until there is so little relevance that it can only be assumed that there is none.

The half-life principle of forum topics. This topic apparently has a very short half-life.
