Civs and specific metals
« on: February 25, 2008, 02:25:00 pm »

So, I've noticed my orcs always have steel weapons and armor, while the humans around them only have iron. I've regenerated worlds a few times and it's always the same. Anybody know of a way to reverse my situation? I'd like orcs to use iron and humans steel. I can't see anything in the entities file that would control this.

I think [METAL_PREF] is the token you're looking for. (Lets them use steel)

I'm not sure what the trigger is for a metal to be fit under the [MINOR_METAL] and [METAL_PREF] tokens. If you play as kobolds they have access to really soft metals, like gold, silver and the like. Perhaps it's relative to the melting temperature of the metal or how many reactions it uses.

It's relative to how powerful it is when used in making weapons and armor.  Steel is best (except for the blue wonder, which has the [DEEP] tag, and is thus ignored for this process), iron is second-best, copper is the worst common metal used in weaponry.

If you make a non-[DEEP] metal that has a higher modifier, races will pick that one instead.  It will also show up on the embark screen as a preferred material (I.E., all weapons and armor (excluding crossbows and picks) will only be made out of this metal).

Want to recreate the bronze age?  Change some modifier values around, and make it fall into one of those categories.  Voila, you now have a civilization that will almost exclusively use bronze.

That doesn't explain what makes a metal a [MINOR_METAL]

I'm quoting here:

What makes a metal a minor metal?
Kobolds use it.

What metal do kobolds use?
The minor metals.
