Power Pets
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:27:00 am »

A while back I made battletoads.  Of note, they are [CAN_CIV][CAN_LEARN] pets (basically [INTELLIGENT] minus [CAN_SPEAK], which gives them all names).  I realized just now that they gain social skills while idling the same way dwarves do.  Given enough time to raise their strength and toughness, they'll become war dogs on steroids.

Don't think [INTELLIGENT] can be pets.

They can.  I switched my battletoads from INTELLIGENT to CAN_CIV,CAN_LEARN because CAN_SPEAK (INTELLIGENT is equivalent to adding those three tags, btw) gave them all names.  I much prefer "Stray battletoad (Tame)" to "Urist Uristurist (Tame)".

Anyway, I currently have one at Spring 1052 with V. Strong, V. Tough, Pacifier, Persuader, Consoler, Flatterer, Negotiator, Judge of Intent, Comedian, Intimidator (yes, that's above Novice for each of those).  Crazy that the pets are more socially adept than my dwarves.

How dare you!
Urist Uristurist is a traditional Dwarvern name.
I am ashamed.

No flippin' clue, unless they're signing each other.

ZOMG!  I just double-checked the creature definition and realized I didn't give them CAN_CIV.  Apparently CAN_LEARN is all it takes.  So maybe our pets are always chatting while idle, but since most of them can't gain skill we don't notice?

Someone needs to set up a test:  Idle hermit dwarf with a stray dog.  Does he gain social skills by chatting with the dog?  Do not assign the dog as a pet, as I don't know how that might affect the dog's behavior.

Chatting with dogs, eh?
It's always possible.

Happened to me when I was in a shop yesterday.
Having a conversation with the shopkeeper when they suddenly stopped, looked at their dog and screeched "ISN'T THAT RIGHT SCHNOOCUMS"

It was traumatising.
But I'm sure I felt my Negotiator skill increasing...

CANLEARN is what allows a creature to gain experience for actions, that's how it's always been.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Engraved on the wall is an image of a dwarf and Battletoads. The dwarf is playing Battletoads.

I gave them a graphic tile, actually.

I've heard about it (no connection to the internet community will let you avoid it), but I've never played it.  Is it any good, or is it just one of those meme-spawned references?

The original and one on the SNES (Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, I think) are great.  The problem is, it's almost impossible to get past the bike level early on.
