As far as I know, trees do give multiple logs sometimes.
I think it depends on the cutter's skill.
To make more wood using smelting:
code:
[REACTION:WOODMULTIPLICATION]
[NAME:double wood]
[SMELTER]
[FUEL]
[REAGENT:1:WOOD:NO_SUBTYPE:WOOD:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:2:WOOD:NO_SUBTYPE:WOOD:OAK]
We need to petition Toady for a :SAME_MATGLOSS tag so that we can put in a willow log and get back two willow logs. However, until that time comes, we're stuck with putting in a willow log and getting back two oak logs, or putting in a tower-cap log, and getting back two oak logs.
Or you can change OAK to any of the tags from matgloss_wood.txt:
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:OAK]
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:MAHOGANY]
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:ACACIA]
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:WILLOW]
Bold is what you need.
Those are just four examples, there are lots and lots of them in the file I mentioned. Feather-tree is a good idea, since it's lightest.
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:FEATHER]
Using NO_MATGLOSS as used for the reagent in the code above will cause wacky problems.
I've never tried it with wood, but with stone, it makes just generic Stone that weighs millions of units per boulder and also happens to be an aquifer.
EDIT: And to be clear, you MUST make a new world in order to use any new entries added to the raws.
Modifications to existing ones are fine, but new ones will not appear and deleted ones will cause errors if you don't make a new world.
EDIT2: In italics directly above.. Doh.
