Companions and weaponry

Will my meatshields ever pick up weapons or armor? I've got an axeman right now who lost his axe in a fight, and even though I've presented him with axes every way I can think of, he just ignores them.

Yeah ma'am see the problem you have is you've got roof wolves. They're pretty common round here sometimes. The only thing I can do in this case is put a puma statue up there and hope it scares them off.
Whats that ma'am? You want me to shoot them?

Try throwing the axe at him, maybe it will get stuck in just in his hand.
I think that is the only way.

Lulz
You offer the axeman an axe. Axeman: No! I want MY axe! hrmf!

Seriously it looks like you will need to go recruit another axeman.

If you do this, won't he become hostile?  Or does that only happen when you shift+a a companion.

I had a drunk steal my spear off the ground once in combat after the creature it got stuck in was killed, and then he ran off with it and got clobbered by a titan. Had a hell of a time getting enough money for another good spear...

Speaking of squads in adventure mode, is there a squad menu or anything where you can view the overall status of your buddies?

It's just a joke, mate.  He's making it up as 'e goes along.

As for the status of your nearby allies, just look at them with "(forgot which key)", like any other critter.  But I don't think you have a roster or anything.

They don't really last long enough to warrant one...

Sometimes they do.  In an older version, I had a companion once become a legendary axeman (he was the first axeman I recruited and stayed with me until the end).  I actually died before he did and he killed everything that had killed me and walked away.  He became a legend and in a fortress I started sometime later I noticed he had become some kind of high-ranking member of a civilization I was trading with.  That was kinda cool.

In my most recent game, my awesome Spearman buddy lost his spear, and proceeded to pick up a pair of pants and use those the rest of his life as a weapon. He died of my own carelessness. ;__;

I was in a cave, and I beat a Giant Rat into submission. It wasn't dead, but I figured it would bleed to death. I go along my way, and start getting messages of my friend having chunks ripped out of him. I ran back, looking for him, and it hit me. "Oh god no, please don't let it be." I thought to myself. I ran back up the hall where I left the giant rat bleeding. I arrived just in time to see my friend's head bitten off.

I proceeded to viciously attack the beast, and when my spear become stuck in it, we started wrestling on the floor. He bit off my leg, but I managed to strangle him to death. With one of my legs gone, I picked up my fallen comrade's body, and carried it back to the inn, setting him in the chair where I found him. ;__; I've never cared more for an NPC.

Wow, that sounds almost movie-quality.  Like a Youtube version of Saving Private Ryan...

My companions last longer than I do...

Seriously, we run into a goblin fortress and they run off and start killing goblins so I'm like "Meh" and run off alone and pretty much always encounter a legendary something-or-another.

In my most recent run (ninth hero) I was investigating a tunnel under a fortress because it was flooding and then encountered a legendary goblin swordsman. Lame. I got my leg chopped off then fell unconscious and watched as I died. Then my lasher friend came up and whipped his eyes out.

I modded in Orcs and Halflings and had an Orc civ pop up next to a Halfling civ.  So I started as an Orc and recruited a bunch of loyal Orcs to help me raid the nearest halfling town.  We slaughered like half the town before we were driven out.  I was lucky to escape, they had like 4 crossbowmen.  Most of my orcs died except one, who took something like 4 bolts without dying.  I ran back to orc territory and recruited some more Orcs.  On the next run we pretty much slaughtered the remaining halflings.  My pincushion companion (the one who took 4 bolts) is still kicking and fighting pretty well.  With all the experience he got chopping halflings to pieces I guess he can still fight despite his grevious injuries.  I swear, he's missing just about all of his non-vital organs.  Now that I've slaughtered about 5 or 6 halfling nobles, I have to wonder what might happen if I started a Dwarf fortress and traded with those halflings.  Would they still be capable of conducting trade and relations?  Do they get new nobles to do their political work or is the civ pretty much just hosed now?

How do you check civilization ranks/status?
