Any cure for the slow down?
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:01:00 pm »

Hey everyone. I really enjoy Fortress mode, but the lag when I play adventure mode makes it unplayable, which is disappointing (and kinda funny, because I've never needed a faster computer to play an ascii game.)

Anyway, is there anything I can with the settings and whatnot, or is it just a matter of having too slow a rig?

One thing that helped me considerably was this:

In the init file (data folder), lower the G_FPS_CAP to about 10. Also, playing without tempature and weather helps, as well as playing in window.

The lag in adventure mode is caused by the recursive raycasting (I think?) utilized in the line-of-sight algorithm.   While groovy for 2d applications, being used in a 3D one is a bit unwieldy, and should be worked on eventually.   Until then you're going to have to tough it out.
