« on: January 13, 2008, 12:54:00 am »

so uh ...

bats can use swords now eh?

this bat grabbed me by the sword

then proceeded to beat and behead me with it.

a bat.

i don't care how giant it is, its not gonna swing a friggin sword.

also enjoy the bonus shot of the drunk beating something up with his loincloth.

I do love a good yarn about beatings with clothing, but a loincloth? That's beyond awesome. Also, I don't see a terrible problem with a giant bat stealing your sword and beating you with it, they've got clawed feet after all.

i guess i just have a hard time imagining a giant bat doing anything remotely similar to a "hack" maneuver :P

i'm not crying for balance or anything, i just wanted to point it out as an oddball thing, not like 99% of DF isn't already pretty oddball, as evidenced by said loincloth :P

It wouldn't have neccessarily had to swing the sword as an intelligent being would have.  Maybe it just was flailing around with the sword in its grip and it happened to produce a nice arc that hacked into you as if swung by a swordsman.  That's certainly realistic.  Creatures will often hang on to limbs torn off during a fight for a while.  A dog in my current fortress carried a kobold arm a few feet before dropping it the other day.

A suggestion, however: perhaps non-intelligent creatures who get ahold of weapons should be more likely to drop them and/or liable to hit themselves with it as well as anything else they happen to be nearby.  This would add a nice element of chaos to fights, though they are already pretty chaotic as is.

the drunk hacks himself in the head with the iron long sword.
the drunk loses the hold of the jaguar leather cap.
the drunk's head flies in a bloody arc.
the drunk has been stuck down.

well.. it will be a usual log if you enable the "things with no skill uses weapons and hits themshelves". also change the words "iron long sword" with "Racoon leather pants" and you will get a closer idea ^^

There's already a function in the game that gradually removes objects you posess by accident, especially if they would normally interfere with your attacking. I've been playing a black dragon adventurer, and have been getting messages like "You let the elf swordsman's head slip away as you attack.".

What a sweet bat. I'd love to have a squadron of tamed giant bats with masterwork swords in each claw.
