The question of item names
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:06:00 pm »

First post here, I've been meaning to ask is there someway to have either abbreviated names on items or to change the item name so it is Leather Loincloth instead of Shark fin Leather Loincloth?

I bring this up because its difficult to see what items I have and have picked up in adventure mode when in the inventory screen, its filled with clutter and deciding what to keep or what to drop is a bit difficult.

I know I can inspect the item in several ways, but it is cumbersome to do so, why not have it so that I can tell what type it is, without cluttering my entire screen.

Why not simply the leather armors specifically with prefixes like Tattered, Polished, etc.

Again I will restate that I know you can view the quality, on the the name, but it does not really explain what it is to a new person, and you almost don't want to bother checking your inventory.

Thank you for your time.

Well, the only thing I can think of is that in the init.txt you can turn off item quality display, so instead of seeing an +(=Bismuth Bronze Sword=)+ it would just say Bismuth Bronze Sword, but I'm fairly certain there is no way to disable it displaying the type of material the item is composed of, because, I believe, the item name itself is not actually "Leather Loincloth", it is always "Rhesus Macaque Leather Loincloth" etc, what ever type, what have you.

It might be possible to mod something, but, I have no experience with that, so other than disabling quality display, I'm not sure if I can offer any help =(

If I'm not mistaken, the init.txt option only disables quality indication on decorations. Normally you see *sock*, but if it's decorated you'll see a spammy =<sock>= or something. Changing the option, as I understand, will cause it to only display <sock>. You still get item quality and the fact that it's decorated, you just strip off the arguably gratuitous indicators of the quality of the decorations.

I cede all points to you, Jonathan, good sir.  I just saw the post had a lonely 0 replies and I didn't want our new forumdwarf to withdrawal from forumciety with melancholy so I flailed around and tried to help, but my own understanding is limited as I've never used the option.

Btw, I *LOVE* what you've done with LCS and can't wait to take some time to really delve back into it =)

First though, I've got to find some creative way to kill off my most recent adventurer.  Then, it's liberal crime time!
