A lot of my veteran militia have been naming their weapons and shields, and while some seem to correctly claim it as part of their family's heirloom a few are claimed by other dwarves who are, according to the relations tab, no more than passing acquaintances to the name giver.

Are family heirlooms bugged or is there an obscure mechanic behind it? I couldn't find anything related in the bug tracker or via googling so I thought I'd ask here before making a bug report.
